Weinam Creek car park plan moves ahead

What’s happening?

The Queensland Government says it will acquire a key Weinam Creek site from Redlands Investment Corporation.

It says the move will help deliver extra parking for Redlands mainland and island locals.

The acquisition follows Redland City Council’s decision to end a neighbouring development agreement.

That project would have delivered a state-funded multi-level car park beside a broader retail plan.

The government says Economic Development Queensland can now fast-track the car park.

Work is already advanced on design, planning approval and construction contracting.

The site sits inside the Weinam Creek Priority Development Area.

That allows Economic Development Queensland to use compulsory acquisition powers.

Why it matters?

Parking at Weinam Creek has been a long-running issue for mainland and island residents.

The government says delays have left locals without enough long-term parking near the marina.

That affects everyday trips between the islands and the mainland.

Local Impact

The issue is especially sharp for residents from Russell, Peel and Lamb islands.

Member for Redlands Rebecca Young said the shortage affects basic mainland errands.

“Right now, residents on the likes of Russell, Peel and Lamb Island have struggled to even do simple things like visiting a doctor, getting groceries and other parts of daily life that we can take for granted on the mainland, simply because there’s nowhere to park,” Ms Young said.

“We promised the people of Redlands a fresh start and we’re taking action to ensure there are no further delays and indecision.”

By the Numbers

  • The Council development agreement had been in place for more than two years before it was terminated in December 2025.
  • One key site will now be acquired from Redlands Investment Corporation to push the parking plan ahead.
  • The government says the move is meant to address a decade of delays under Labor.

Zoom In

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the acquisition would help remove a major barrier to the long-awaited project.

The Crisafulli Government does what we say we’re going to do, and we won’t allow inaction by others to be a barrier,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“It’s regrettable that for more than two years after the preferred development partner was announced, the Council opted to terminate its partnership, which impacted building the long-awaited carpark next door.”

“As such, Economic Development Queensland is using its compulsory acquisition powers to step in, secure and fast track a solution the community has been crying out for over many years.”

Zoom Out

The move resets a major part of the Weinam Creek Priority Development Area.

Instead of waiting on a linked retail project, the State is moving to deliver the parking solution directly.

That changes the path forward for a site tied up in planning and partnership issues.

What To Look For Next?

The next visible steps are the final design, planning approval and construction contracting.

Those stages should show how quickly the extra parking can be delivered at Weinam Creek.
