What’s happening?

This October 2024, Queensland Health released the Executive Summary and Recommendations of the Part 9 health service investigation into the endoscopy practices at Redland Hospital.

The review focused on procedures performed by two doctors from 2008 to 2018, revealing lapses in standard care.

Metro South Health apologised to affected patients, stating, “We extend our sincere apologies for any concern or distress caused to the patients, families, and carers impacted by these issues.”

Why it Matters

The investigation was initiated after concerns were raised about the quality of endoscopies provided at Redland Hospital, underlining the importance of patient safety and care standards.

This review led to a series of procedural reforms, emphasising Metro South Health’s commitment to improvement. “Providing high-quality and safe care is our number one priority,” Metro South Health asserted.

By the Numbers

  • 10-year period: the span during which these procedures were under scrutiny.
  • 2 doctors: whose practices were the focus of the investigation.

Zoom in

Metro South Health has taken prompt action, implementing numerous recommendations from the investigation.

Changes include reinforcing a ‘speak up for safety’ policy, appointing a dedicated patient safety officer, and establishing new governance within the Endoscopy Unit, such as the addition of a Deputy Director of Endoscopy reporting directly to executive leadership.

Zoom Out

These reforms come as part of a broader effort by Queensland Health to enhance quality across its services.

Since 2018, Redland Hospital has introduced standard endoscopy performance metrics, regular audits, and consumer engagement initiatives, with patient representatives now attending key governance meetings.

Local Impact

Affected patients were individually contacted, with necessary procedures repeated to ensure their well-being.

Metro South Health expressed commitment to improving endoscopy care, stating, “We welcome the recommendations… and the majority of these have already been implemented.”

What to look for next

Metro South Health aims to further review findings to identify additional areas for patient care improvement, continually reassuring the community, “We are absolutely committed to providing high-quality services at Redland Hospital.”
