What’s happening?

Mater Private Hospital Redland has officially opened new surgical and procedural suites, enabling the treatment of an additional 5,000 patients annually. The expansion includes a new endoscopy suite, two new operating theatres, and a dedicated eye procedure theatre featuring Australia’s first See Luma digital ophthalmology microscope.

Why it matters

This major investment will allow more local patients to access faster, high-quality healthcare close to home, reducing the need to travel into Brisbane. It also expands the hospital’s ability to meet current and future health needs in line with the region’s population growth.

Local Impact

General Manager Chris Junge said, “This expansion is a huge win for healthcare in the Redlands. It means we will be welcoming an additional 5,000 patients through the doors of Mater Private Hospital Redland each year.”

Twelve new specialist doctors have joined the hospital’s consultant team, broadening the scope of services. The hospital can now perform more local procedures such as bowel cancer checks, cataract treatments, hip and knee replacements, and low-risk neurosurgery.

“Crucially, our investment means that it will be much easier for local residents to see a specialist in the Redlands and have their procedure performed without having to travel into the city. We’re delivering exceptional, convenient healthcare for the Redlands community,” Mr Junge added.

Mater Foundation part-funded the expansion. The new facilities were officially opened and blessed this week by Father Ignas Sibar, Mater’s Catholic Chaplain.

Mater Group Chief Executive Julia Strickland-Bellamy said, “Mater’s first Queensland hospital was founded by the Sisters of Mercy, more than a century ago, to address the unmet healthcare needs of our communities – and this is exactly what we’re continuing to do here in Redland.”

She added, “Our investment in high-quality infrastructure and world-leading technology is ensuring that Mater will continue to meet the growing health needs of the Redlands community.”

The expansion aligns with Mater’s broader strategy to enhance healthcare services across Queensland’s growing regions. This project reinforces the group’s mission to provide exceptional, localised healthcare, continuing a legacy that began more than 100 years ago.
