Toondah Harbour Development Revisited
Councillor Peter Mitchell is advocating for a revised approach to the Toondah Harbour development, emphasising the need for comprehensive solutions that incorporate both environmental and transportation considerations.
The original proposal, which included residential, commercial, and community facilities, along an upgrade to the North Stradbroke Island ferry, faced significant pushback from the Minister for Environment, Tanya Plibersek.
This opposition led to the withdrawal of the application by Walker Corporation in April.
A Call for Integrated Solutions
Cr Mitchell stressed the importance of a unified effort from Federal and State Governments to ensure the success of any future development plans. “Given the environmental sensitivity of the area, it is crucial to have the Federal Government involved to guarantee that any proposal has embedded workable environmental outcomes,” he stated.
He also highlighted that the state bears much of the transport responsibilities, and thus, the ratepayers should not be unduly burdened.
Linking Toondah and Dunwich
For Cr Mitchell, the key to a successful Toondah Harbour development lies in its integration with a corresponding development at the Port of Dunwich.
He proposed a synchronised investment in both land and marine public transportation systems, advocating for a holistic vision that includes smart ticketing and high-frequency services to the three townships of Stradbroke Island.
“Development of both a Toondah Harbour and a Dunwich proposal must include wholly integrated smart ticketing public transportation with Translink,” he asserted.
Sustainable Housing and Tourism
The emphasis on integrated transportation solutions is not just about convenience but also about ensuring liveable housing and fostering robust tourism and economic outcomes.
According to Cr Mitchell, without such a vision, any isolated proposal would likely fall short in environmental, economic, and social terms. He believes that a comprehensive, well-thought-out plan is essential for the long-term success and sustainability of the region.
Cr Mitchell’s call for a collaborative effort from all levels of government and stakeholders is a step towards a sustainable and prosperous future for Toondah and its surrounding areas.
