Connecting Communities: The Importance of Men’s Sheds

This year marks the 30th anniversary of International Men’s Health Week, celebrated from June 10 to 16. The event focuses on raising awareness about men’s health checks and emphasising the importance of mental, social, and physical well-being.

As part of these celebrations, Redland-based groups and health organisations are highlighting resources available to men, including the significant role played by community groups like the Cleveland Uniting Church (CUC) Men’s Shed.

A Decade of Support and Camaraderie

The CUC Men’s Shed, now in its 11th year, offers a welcoming and supportive environment for its 40 to 50 members, with around 25 attending weekly. According to President Ben Warner, the Men’s Shed is a fantastic place for men to meet, share experiences, and seek advice.

The group meets twice a week for morning tea, where members are encouraged to discuss anything on their minds, including health-related topics.

“As you do get older, things can be going wrong all the time,” Warner notes, stressing the importance of having a supportive community. The Men’s Shed provides an opportunity to maintain social connections that might otherwise diminish after retirement. Regular meetings allow men to openly discuss their health in a non-judgemental space, making it easier to address any concerns.

The Australian Connection

In Australia, Men’s Sheds have become a crucial part of the community, offering a space for men to engage in activities, form friendships, and support each other’s well-being.

The Australian Men’s Shed Association reports that there are over 1,000 sheds across the country, emphasising the universal need for such supportive networks.

Looking Forward

The CUC Men’s Shed continues to welcome all on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 7.30 am to 11.30 am, thanks to the ongoing support of the Cleveland Uniting Church.

Warner and his group are grateful for this space where they can foster camaraderie and discuss health openly, ensuring that no man feels isolated.

The 30th anniversary of International Men’s Health Week serves as a reminder of the importance of initiatives like the Men’s Shed in promoting health and well-being among men.
