The 2025 Redlands Coast Australia Day Awards celebrated exceptional community members, recognising their contributions to making the region a better place to live.
The awards ceremony highlighted achievements across various categories presented with Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell – Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and more.

By the Numbers
- 20+ years: Length of service by Senior Citizen of the Year Patricia Ponting across various organisations, including Meals on Wheels and the Animal Welfare League.
- $2300 raised: Amount raised by nine-year-old Theo Horvatic for Anglicare Southern Queensland to support respite camps for foster children and carers.
- 200% increase: Growth in junior participation in the North Stradbroke Island Rugby League and Allsports Club post-COVID, highlighting its impact on youth engagement.

Citizen of the Year – Sandy Smith:
Sandy Smith, president of the National Council of Women of Queensland (NCWQ), was recognised for her advocacy for women and young people.
She spearheaded initiatives such as the Angel’s Corner in the Redlands for domestic violence survivors and led the creation of an advocacy hub for women’s policy representation.
Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell praised her efforts, saying, “Redlands Coast is very fortunate to have people such as Sandy who are making a real difference in our community.”
Young Citizen of the Year – Theo Horvatic:
Theo, just nine years old, has already made significant contributions by raising over $2300 for Anglicare.
He has mobilised community support, designed posters, and even baked cookies to thank donors.
Mayor Mitchell noted, “Theo is only nine but is already making an impact in the community… his determination and compassion inspire others to make a difference.”
Local Hero Award – John Bullion:
A 40-year advocate for Birkdale State School, John has been a cornerstone of its community.
His work as a volunteer historian has preserved the school’s rich history, making it one of the best-documented schools in Redlands Coast.
