What’s happening?

A retired grandfather from Wynnum has won the entire $31,140,405.47 Powerball jackpot, drawn last week. His winning entry was the only Division One ticket nationwide in draw 1523.

Why it matters

In a rare solo win, the Brisbane man has become one of the biggest individual lottery winners in Queensland this year. More than just a personal windfall, he plans to use the money to help others and secure the future of his family.

Local Impact

The quietly spoken grandad says he’s ticked off most things from his own bucket list, so the prize will go towards supporting his children and grandchildren.

“This does so much for my family,” he said. “It’ll set up my kids and grandkids.”

By the numbers:

  • $31.14 million prize won by one man with a PowerHit entry

  • 1 division one winning ticket across Australia for draw 1523

  • 55 wins in Queensland among The Lott’s 242 division one wins so far in 2025

Still stunned during the call with lottery officials, the man admitted he hadn’t checked his ticket. “Holy sh**! Wow. Unbelievable,” he said. “The most I’ve ever won is a chocolate Easter basket!”

The grandfather has been playing the same numbers for years and usually sticks with Saturday Gold Lotto, only switching to Powerball when the jackpot climbs.

“I just can’t believe it. I had absolutely no idea,” he said. “Now, I’m going to have a quiet day letting reality set in.”

Zoom Out

The 2025 jackpot win follows a year of big payouts. In 2024, Powerball handed out more than $773 million to 21 division one winners. One Adelaide man became the nation’s biggest individual lottery winner, taking home $150 million.

So far this year, Golden Casket customers have claimed 55 division one wins. Powerball’s winning numbers for the 24 July draw were 2, 25, 6, 4, 31, 34 and 19, with Powerball number 20.

What to look for next?

Next week’s Oz Lotto offers a $20 million jackpot, and Powerball resets to $4 million. Set for Life continues daily, with $20,000 a month on offer for 20 years.
