What’s Happening?

Three athletes from Neon Boxing Academy in Redland Bay—Luke Morrison (21), Gene Keremete (23), and Kipa Keremete (24)—have been selected to represent Queensland at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra from 25 May to 1 June 2025. This selection camp is the final step before qualifying for the Australian National Team competing at the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England.

Their coach, Leon Lay (Coach Neon), has also been appointed to the Queensland Coaching Team for the third consecutive year.

Why It Matters

This opportunity is more than a tournament; it’s a pathway for these athletes to represent Australia on the world stage. However, the trip to Canberra is only partially subsidised. Each athlete must contribute $700 towards travel and accommodation. Neon Boxing Academy has launched a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $4,000 to cover these costs and support potential travel to Liverpool should they qualify.

Coach Leon, who has over 20 years of coaching experience across boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, and MMA, is covering his own expenses to support his athletes. He holds a Jiu Jitsu Black Belt 1st Dan, a Black Singlet in Muay Thai, and a Brown Belt in MMA. His dedication underscores the importance of this opportunity for the athletes and the community.

Local Impact

Since its opening in late 2023, Neon Boxing Academy has grown to support over 150 members, focusing on holistic youth development and inclusion. The gym serves as a community hub, fostering discipline, respect, and unity through boxing and fitness.

Coach Leon’s commitment to his athletes and the community has been instrumental in their development. Under his guidance, the academy has produced national and state champions, reflecting the effectiveness of their training programs.

  • $700: Individual contribution required from each athlete.

  • 150+: Members supported by Neon Boxing Academy since its inception.
