Wellington Point Jetty closed for safety upgrades

Welling Point Jetty

What’s Happening?

Wellington Point’s popular jetty is temporarily closed for approximately five weeks, started 4 November 2024, as Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) carries out urgent maintenance repairs to ensure structural safety.

Why it Matters?

The closure allows MSQ to replace worn wooden sections of the jetty, which include beams and supports that have deteriorated over time.

According to Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell, these repairs are essential, as “structural components have been compromised due to rusting bolts and timber weathering,” which affects the jetty’s safety.

She stressed that these repairs are “to keep the jetty safe and usable for everyone.”

By the Numbers

  • 5-week closure period started on 4 November for urgent repairs.
  • Stage 1 work on marine piles already in progress via a floating barge.
  • Stage 2 repairs will address timber headstocks, girders, and other structural components.

Zoom in

MSQ will conduct Stage 2 repairs, requiring full jetty closure.

Mayor Mitchell assured that the Council and MSQ are coordinating efforts to complete the work promptly, minimising disruption ahead of the peak summer period.

Division 1 Councillor Wendy Boglary echoed the importance of the repairs, stating that the work was necessary “to prevent future costly repairs and to extend the jetty’s lifespan.”

Zoom Out

Repairs are set to finish just before the high-demand summer season, though MSQ plans to continue Stage 2 repairs early in the new year.

Cr Boglary expressed optimism, saying, “It will hopefully re-open in time for the summer school holiday period.”

Local Impact

The maintenance ensures that Wellington Point jetty will remain a safe and lasting landmark for residents and visitors.
