Recovery efforts are underway to address the embankment slippage that plagued the eastern side of Wellington Point Reserve’s escarpment. Following a challenging assessment and planning phase, the project officially commenced with Mayor Karen Williams providing insight into the crucial rehabilitation endeavour.
Mayor Williams emphasised the technical complexities of the slope stabilisation work, which necessitates the expertise of specialist consultants and contractors. The core strategy involves the installation of an anchor and mesh system designed not only to curtail erosion but also to encourage the growth of vegetation within the embankment.
Acknowledging the patience and understanding of the community throughout the investigative and solution-finding stages, Mayor Williams expressed the council’s gratitude for the support they’ve received.
The embankment slippage initially occurred during a bout of severe weather in February 2022, resulting in the closure of the foreshore track that stretches between Main Road and the eastern side of Wellington Point Recreation Reserve.
Council member Wendy Boglary voiced her relief at the initiation of the repair efforts, which are anticipated to conclude by December 1, barring any adverse weather conditions. She also extended her gratitude to the community for their patience during this protracted process.
For the duration of the rehabilitation project, traffic control measures will be enforced along Esplanade, with fencing and signage remaining in place until the restoration work reaches completion.
