What’s happening?

A new exhibition, The Unbroken Spirit of the Kalkadoons, will open at the State Library of Queensland (SLQ) on 22 March 2025, showcasing previously hidden family stories of resilience, survival, and cultural strength. The exhibition features paintings, digital stories, and archival materials from Kalkadoon artist Colleen Sam, shedding light on the unbroken spirit of the Kalkadoon people of North West Queensland.

Why it matters?

For generations, the Sam family has preserved stories of frontier violence, resistance, and survival in secret. This exhibition publicly shares these accounts for the first time, recognising key figures like Kalkadoon law keepers King Jimmy and Queen Nellie, and warrior Wild Harry, a survivor of Battle Mountain. SLQ’s involvement expands the exhibition’s reach, bringing these significant stories into the public sphere.

Local Impact

The exhibition highlights the enduring cultural identity and strength of the Kalkadoon people, emphasising the importance of oral storytelling. Colleen Sam’s artwork, inspired by the teachings of her mother, Aunty Ena, and other family elders, provides a deeply personal connection to the land and history of Mount Isa.

“Culture creates that sense of self and that strength; not only emotional strength but spiritual strength as well,” said Colleen Sam.

By the Numbers:

  • The exhibition runs for five months from 22 March to 24 August 2025, offering free public access daily from 10am–5pm at SLQ.
  • Features four generations of Sam family stories, passed down since the 1850s.
  • Includes a dedicated learning and healing space, with a yarning circle for community discussions.

Zoom In

The exhibition builds on its first iteration at Logan Art Gallery, with SLQ working closely with the Sam family to expand the collection. Previously unknown historical knowledge has also emerged through SLQ’s research into its archives.

“Mum said; ‘You will listen to these stories because if you don’t know your stories, you’ll never know your Country.’” – Colleen Sam.

Zoom Out

The Unbroken Spirit of the Kalkadoons aligns with SLQ’s broader mission to honour Aboriginal peoples, culture, and knowledge.

“Visitors to this important exhibition will experience the quiet courage of the Sam family over four generations,” said State Librarian and CEO Vicki McDonald AM.
“It is an act of bravery to share personal stories, and State Library thanks the Sam family for this gift.”

What to Look for Next?

SLQ will continue working with Indigenous communities to expand cultural storytelling initiatives. The exhibition’s learning resources will be available for schools and the broader public, ensuring the Kalkadoon people’s legacy reaches future generations.
