What’s happening?

Special Olympics Australia is marking its 50th anniversary in 2026, celebrating five decades of inclusion through sport for people with intellectual disability and/or autism.

The milestone also leads into the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games in Melbourne, a major event that will bring athletes, families, coaches, volunteers and supporters together in one national celebration.

It also carries a strong local link through Special Olympics Redlands Qld, a not-for-profit group that runs various activities across the year for local athletes and families.

Why it matters?

Special Olympics exists to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autism.

That work gives athletes ongoing opportunities to build physical fitness, show courage, experience joy and share their gifts, skills and friendship with families, other athletes and the wider community.

Across five decades, Special Olympics Australia has also helped communities better understand inclusion, belonging and the value of sport for everyone.

Local Impact

In Redlands, that mission is carried through Special Olympics Redlands Qld, which gives local athletes a place to take part, stay active and build connections throughout the year.

The local group helps make inclusion real at the community level, giving children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autism a chance to train, compete and belong close to home.

For families, it also creates a support network built around shared experiences, encouragement and pride.

By the numbers

  • 2026 marks 50 years since Special Olympics Australia began in 1976, reaching a major milestone in inclusive sport.
  • An estimated 850,000 Australians live with an intellectual disability and/or autism, showing the broad community impact of programs like these.
  • Another child is diagnosed every two hours, underlining why ongoing support, access and inclusion matter.
  • The National Games will run from 19 to 23 October 2026, bringing athletes from across the nation together in Melbourne.
  • Athletes will compete across 12 sports, with the National Games held every four years as a major national event.

Zoom In

From 19 to 23 October 2026, athletes from across Australia will gather in Melbourne for the Special Olympics Australia National Games.

Over five days, the event will celebrate courage, connection and community, with athletes supported by coaches, volunteers, families and supporters.

Whether it is on the track, in the pool or from the sidelines, the Games will show what inclusion can look like in action.

Zoom Out

The 50-year milestone reflects a much bigger story about access, opportunity and belonging in Australia.

From local playing fields to national and world stages, Special Olympics Australia has helped tens of thousands of athletes grow in confidence, independence, friendship and pride.

That impact reaches beyond sport and into how communities welcome and support people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism.

What To Look For Next?

As the anniversary year continues, the 2026 National Games in Melbourne will stand as a major moment for athletes, families and local groups such as Special Olympics Redlands Qld.

It will also be a chance to highlight the value of year-round local programs that help inclusion grow long after the Games end.
