Seqwater has unveiled its 2023 Water Security Program, a bold 30-year plan that promises a resilient water supply for South East Queensland. As Redland City continues to grow and faces the challenges of climate change, this comprehensive strategy ensures that a safe and secure water source remains a top priority.

A Robust Strategy for Population Growth

With the population in South East Queensland projected to surpass 6 million in the next three decades, Seqwater is taking proactive steps to meet the growing demand. The program maximises existing assets and explores climate-resilient water supply solutions.

Expanding and Innovating

Seqwater’s plan includes expanding the Gold Coast Desalination Plant at Tugun and increasing production to relieve pressure on existing supplies. Furthermore, they’re building a new downstream water treatment plant to connect Wyaralong Dam to the grid, becoming South East Queensland’s fifth-largest drinking water source.

Innovation for Drought Resilience

Seqwater is proactively preparing Redland City for climate change by planning for a new desalination plant by 2035. This forward-thinking strategy addresses changing climate patterns. Additionally, the Water Security Program includes measures to ensure drought resilience, using the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme to maintain water grid levels above 40%. This not only secures the water supply but also opens opportunities for agriculture and emerging industries like hydrogen production.

Seamless Water Management

Seqwater intends to collaborate with water retail firms to improve water demand forecasting, optimise grid operations, and ensure supply matches current and predicted demands.

Seqwater CEO Neil Brennan sums up the initiative: “Climate change is factored into our planning, and we are committed to safeguarding our most precious resource for generations to come.”
