Henry Pike MP with Redlands Tigers

What’s happening?

The iconic EGW Wood Sports Fields at Wellington Point, home to the Redlands Tigers, are set to receive a $1.1 million funding boost, pledged by Henry Pike MP if the Dutton Coalition Government is elected early next year.

The funding will upgrade training and playing facilities, including the installation of new turf practice nets, lighting upgrades, and a new women’s changeroom and bathroom block.

Why it Matters?

This investment supports the growing demand for cricket facilities in the region and positions Redlands as a potential Olympic training hub for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

It aligns with Cricket Australia’s national priority of increasing women’s participation and bolstering grassroots and elite cricket programs.

Local Impact

The upgrades will benefit the entire Redlands cricket community, from local junior teams to elite athletes like Marnus Labuschagne and Sam Heazlett. Redlands Cricket President Sean Lloyd said, “This investment will provide much-needed support in the growth of sustainable programs for cricket players of all ages.”

By the Numbers:

  • $1.1 million in pledged funding for the Tigers’ facilities.
  • 2032 Olympics inclusion of cricket provides a pathway for the venue to host T20 games.
  • Enhancements include new turf practice nets, a women’s changeroom, and improved infrastructure.

Zoom In

This transformative funding builds on recent improvements, such as lighting upgrades under the SEQ City Deal.

Cricket Australia has identified the redevelopment of Peter Burge Oval as a national priority to boost women’s cricket, fast-tracking Redlands’ evolution into a state-of-the-art facility.

Zoom Out

The commitment by Henry Pike MP and the Dutton Coalition showcases the growing emphasis on community sport and the region’s ability to attract national and international cricket events.

With a rich cricketing history, Redlands is being positioned as a vital sporting hub in Queensland.

What To Look For Next?

The outcome of the next federal election will determine if this funding becomes a reality.

If successful, the upgrades will solidify Redlands Tigers’ status as a leading cricket club and open doors to hosting community carnivals, training camps, and Olympic events.
