Redland City Council welcomed new Australian citizens during two special ceremonies held on 17 September to mark Australian Citizenship Day.
Acting Mayor Julie Talty presided over both ceremonies and welcomed the new citizens to Redlands Coast.
Why It Matters
The ceremonies brought together new citizens from a wide range of backgrounds, including people from Nepal, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Zambia, Egypt and Malaysia. Talty said Australian Citizenship Day provided an opportunity to reflect on the meaning and values of citizenship.
“These ceremonies were particularly significant as they were held on Australian Citizenship Day, where we reflect on the meaning of being an Australian, our shared values and history, and the many privileges and freedoms we are afforded in this wonderful country,” she said.
Local Impact
The ceremonies welcomed new Australian citizens and their families into the Redlands Coast community. Talty said citizenship creates a shared bond despite differences in backgrounds, experiences and languages.
“While we may have different backgrounds, life experiences and languages, Australian citizenship is a bond that unites us all and welcoming new citizens helps to enrich the cultural and social fabric of our community.”

- More than 300 people took the pledge to become Australian citizens during the Redlands Coast ceremonies.
- 37 countries were represented among the new citizens welcomed by Redland City Council.
- More than half of all Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was, according to the council release.

Talty said citizenship represents a lifelong commitment to the shared values of freedom, equal opportunity, democracy and respect.
“Whether a citizen by birth or by choice, we all have a duty to uphold these values and should take pride in what it means to be Australian,” she said.

“We are proud of this cultural diversity on Redlands Coast and warmly welcome our new citizens and their families to enjoy everything our naturally wonderful city has to offer.”
Talty also congratulated the new citizens and wished them well for the next chapter of their lives on Redlands Coast.
