What’s Happening

In response to the significant waste and damage caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, Redland City Council has rolled out extensive recovery initiatives. These include kerbside green waste collection, surplus food waste disposal sites, extended Recycling and Waste Centre hours, and Community Recovery Hubs to assist residents in their clean-up and recovery efforts.

Why It Matters

The cyclone left widespread debris, fallen trees, and power outages, creating an urgent need for waste management solutions and community support. The Council’s proactive measures aim to facilitate a smooth recovery process, minimising health risks and ensuring Redlands Coast residents have the necessary resources to restore their properties and communities.

By the Numbers

  • March 17, 2025 – Kerbside green waste collection begins.
  • March 16, 2025 – Surplus food waste drop-off sites close.
  • 7am – 5.15pm – Extended operating hours for Recycling and Waste Centres.
  • 6am – 8pm – Surplus green waste drop-off sites remain open until further notice.
  • Multiple drop-off sites – Temporary disposal locations activated across Redland City.
  • Three Community Recovery Hubs – Providing access to grants, emotional support, and clean-up assistance.

Local Impact

Residents across Redlands Coast, particularly those facing mobility issues or lacking resources, are receiving much-needed support. The introduction of green waste kerbside collection and community-led waste removal efforts help ensure a faster, more efficient recovery. Power outages have left many households dealing with spoiled food, prompting the activation of designated surplus food waste disposal sites.

Zoom In: Community on the Frontline

Residents who are struggling to manage fallen trees, large branches, and debris can register for Green Waste Removal Support. This program prioritises those with mobility or health concerns, ensuring that critical clean-up efforts are handled efficiently. According to a Redland City Council representative:

“We know this clean-up is a big job, and for some in our community, it’s just too much to handle alone. That’s why we’ve set up support options to help as many people as we can.”

Additionally, Community Recovery Hubs have been established to assist with grant applications, emotional support, and practical recovery services. These hubs will be available in Dunwich, Russell Island, and Thornlands

Zoom Out: Managing Large-Scale Waste Disposal

To ensure an efficient waste disposal process, Redland City Council has extended the operating hours of all Recycling and Waste Centres. Large vehicles and trucks carrying green waste are being directed to Giles Road, Redland Bay to avoid congestion. Council reminds residents:

“It’s a relief to have these drop-off sites and extended hours. The Council’s efforts are making the recovery process a little easier.” – Local Resident

Surplus food waste and highly odorous waste (e.g., nappies) can be disposed of at specific locations until March 16, helping households affected by power outages manage their waste efficiently.

What To Do With Your Sandbags

  • Uncontaminated sandbags – Store for future use, or scatter sand on lawns, pavers, or sandpits (avoiding stormwater drains). Empty bags can be placed in general waste bins.
  • Contaminated sandbags – Those that have been in contact with floodwater or sewage must be taken to Recycling and Waste Centres once visitation numbers reduce, to prevent environmental and health risks.

What To Look For Next?

Redland City Council will continue assessing the recovery needs of residents and may introduce additional support programs based on demand. Residents are encouraged to follow official updates via Redland City Council’s social media pages and website for any further announcements. Additionally, kerbside bin collections have resumed, but residents are reminded that only waste inside bins will be collected—loose kerbside waste will not be picked up.

With recovery efforts in full swing, Redlands Coast residents are encouraged to utilise the available resources and work together to restore their community. The road to recovery is underway, and with continued cooperation, Redland City is set to bounce back stronger than ever.
