What’s Happening?
Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell has resigned from office, triggering a by-election to elect a new mayor following her departure on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.
Redland City Council confirmed it had received Mitchell’s resignation, leaving the Office of Mayor vacant. Councillor Julie Talty will continue serving as Acting Mayor during the election period.
In a separate statement, Mitchell outlined her reasons for stepping down, citing ongoing personal challenges, alleged harassment and recent health conditions.
Why It Matters
Mitchell’s resignation means eligible Redland City residents will have the opportunity to elect a new mayor before the next scheduled Queensland local government elections in 2028.
Council Chief Executive Officer Louise Rusan confirmed that the Electoral Commission of Queensland will oversee the process.
“In accordance with Queensland local government electoral requirements, a by-election is now required to fill the vacant position,” Ms Rusan said.
The successful candidate will serve as Mayor until the next Queensland local government elections.
Local Impact
Acting Mayor Julie Talty said her immediate focus remains on supporting the Redlands Coast community and maintaining stable leadership during the transition.
“My focus as Acting Mayor remains on supporting our community and providing steady leadership during this period of transition.”
Council has also confirmed that its existing services and priorities will continue while arrangements for the by-election progress.

In her resignation statement, Mitchell said she had entered local government as an independent candidate seeking greater transparency, accountability and planning for the community.
However, she alleged that efforts to pursue those priorities were met with ongoing resistance and personal attacks. Mitchell also reported threats, online harassment, vandalism involving family vehicles and incidents affecting her husband and daughter.
She said she had been the subject of approximately 70 complaints to the Office of the Independent Assessor, claiming that all investigated complaints had been found unsubstantiated by external investigators. These figures and outcomes are presented as Mitchell’s account and have not been independently verified.
Mitchell also disclosed that she had undergone major surgery and was managing an autoimmune condition. She said the experiences of the past two and a half years had affected her wellbeing.
“My family has paid a heavy price for my decision to serve our community. While they have dealt with the impact with grace and dignity, no one should have to accept it as the price of public office.”

Mitchell, meanwhile, concluded her statement by thanking Redlands residents and those who supported her during her time as Mayor. She also encouraged Council to work towards a more collegial workplace for councillors, staff and the community.
The Council did not address Mitchell’s allegations.
