Redland City Embraces Smart Solar Bins for Citywide Implementation

Redland City Council has dedicated a budget of $365,000 in the upcoming 2023-2024 community budget to expand the successful solar bin trial and implement it throughout the entire Redlands Coast.

Following a trial period featuring ten smart solar compacting rubbish bins at Wellington Point Recreation Reserve, Mayor Karen Williams announced the citywide roll-out of these innovative bins.

With a capacity of 240 litres, these solar bins can compact waste up to eight times the volume of standard bins, all while collecting valuable data on usage and fullness. Mayor Williams highlighted the benefits of this technology, stating, “This allows us to reduce the frequency of collections by receiving notifications when the bins are nearing capacity. As a result, significant cost savings can be achieved.”

Mayor Williams further emphasised that the smart solar bins align with the council’s commitment to promoting the green economy and ensuring a greener, cleaner, and more efficient waste management program. In line with this vision, Redland City Council has formed a partnership with Logan and Ipswich councils to establish a regional Material Recovery Facility. Nearly $7 million has been allocated in the 2023-2024 budget to support this initiative, which aims to foster a sustainable local circular economy.

In addition to the roll-out of smart solar bins, Redland City Council plans to enhance its sustainability efforts by introducing hybrid vehicles into its fleet. The council is dedicated to pursuing various initiatives that align with its environmental goals across Redlands Coast.

Furthermore, the 2023-2024 budget highlights that despite increasing waste disposal and recycling costs, the recycling and waste centres will remain free for residents, underscoring the council’s commitment to promoting responsible waste management practices.

With the implementation of smart solar bins and a holistic approach towards sustainability, Redland City Council aims to set an example for other communities and contribute to a greener future.
