As cost-of-living pressures continue to rise, Redland City Council is actively supporting households to manage their waste more efficiently and cost-effectively. Mayor Karen Williams announced the implementation of a flexible ‘bin menu,’ allowing residents to customise their kerbside wheelie bins to suit their circumstances.
The initiative aims to reduce waste, enhance recycling efforts, and maintain an economical recycling service for the entire Redlands Coast community. Mayor Karen Williams emphasised the importance of responsible waste management in tackling environmental challenges.
“By offering a range of bin options, we want to help residents save money, minimise waste going to landfills, and contribute to a more sustainable future for Redlands Coast,” stated Mayor Williams.
The ‘bin menu’ presents several options for residents to optimise their waste disposal:
- Green Waste Bin Offset: Mainland residents can offset the cost of a new household green waste bin by downsizing their red-lid general waste bin to a 140-litre capacity when placing their orders.
- Recycling Bin Upsize: Residents can upsize their recycling bin from 240 to 340 litres for a nominal one-off fee of $32, with no additional ongoing costs.
- General Waste Bin Downsizing Reward: Residents who consistently find that their standard 240-litre general waste bin is not fully utilised each week can downsize to a 140-litre waste bin and save on annual charges. This option also requires a one-time establishment fee of $32.
The establishment fee covers the cost of the bin, delivery, and administrative expenses, making it an affordable option for residents seeking to adapt their waste management approach.
Mayor Williams expressed concerns over the current percentage of recyclables and garden organics ending up in landfills. “Approximately 16 per cent of recyclables and 30 per cent of garden organics still find their way to landfill. Through these bin options, we aim to minimise waste and promote responsible recycling practices,” she said.
Furthermore, Mayor Williams urged tenants to engage with their landlords or estate agents to explore potential cost-saving measures related to waste management.
The Redland City Council’s ‘bin menu’ initiative reinforces the community’s commitment to creating a greener, more sustainable environment while helping households cope with the ever-increasing cost of living.
Residents are encouraged to assess their waste management needs and make use of the available options to contribute to a more eco-conscious and budget-friendly future for Redlands Coast. Together, collective efforts can substantially impact waste reduction and foster a cleaner, more sustainable city.
