A New Challenge for a Record-Breaker
Not content with her world record for dribbling a soccer ball long-distance, Fran Hurndall is set to tackle a new challenge: the fastest run across Australia. The retired English soccer player aims to run from Perth to the Sydney Opera House in just 34 days, covering 110km daily and surpassing the previous 39-day record.
From Soccer Dribbles to Long-Distance Runs
In 2023, the 32-year-old dribbled a soccer ball from the Gold Coast to Sydney, setting a Guinness World Record to raise awareness of women’s sport during the Women’s World Cup. Now, she has a new mission: raising funds for domestic violence victims.
“I’ve seen a couple of people run from Perth to Sydney, and I just wanted to challenge myself,” Fran said.
Inspired by Personal Experience
Chris Turnbull set the previous record in December, beating Nedd Brockmann’s 2022 record of 47 days. Inspired by her sister’s escape from an abusive relationship, Fran is determined to make a difference.
“Not everyone is fortunate enough to have that luxury,” she said.
Raising Awareness and Funds
In Australia, one woman is murdered by her partner every week, and two-thirds of victims never contact police. Fran hopes to raise $1 million for RizeUp, a charity helping survivors set up new homes.
“It costs around $6,000 for RizeUp to fit out a house,” Fran said. “Six grand a house, that’s 166 houses we could furnish and help families in need.”
The Epic Journey
Her journey will traverse the Nullarbor Plain and the Great Victoria Desert, requiring 12-14 hours of running per day. With support from a logistics team in two vans, providing food, water, and a sleeping trailer, she anticipates burning 7000 calories daily and wearing out 11 pairs of shoes.
Supported by Loved Ones
Fran will also be supported by her partner, Natalie Gidas, a police forensics expert who has investigated numerous domestic violence and homicide cases.
Bringing Attention to Domestic Violence
Besides raising funds, Fran aims to bring widespread attention to domestic violence. “I just want to make it easier for people to talk about these things and get help when they need it,” she said.
