What’s happening?

The Department of Primary Industries has opened round 2 of the Queensland Biosecurity Boost Grants Program, with applications now open.

The program supports projects that foster innovation, enhance education, strengthen preparedness, and build strong biosecurity practices across Queensland.

Round 2 also includes extra funding to deliver stakeholder-led biosecurity incident exercises across the state.

Why it matters

Biosecurity depends on early action and shared responsibility across industries and communities.

DPI Deputy Director-General Biosecurity Dr Rachel Chay said the funding strengthens Queensland’s frontline against biosecurity threats.

“A strong biosecurity system is reliant on all stakeholders playing a part and these grants provide the boost many individuals and organisations need to put their ideas into action,” Dr Chay said.

By the numbers

  • Three innovation grants of $30,000 are available, supporting projects that test new tools, ideas, or approaches to biosecurity.

  • Eight education grants of $15,000 are offered to help organisations deliver learning programs and raise awareness.

  • The funding supports Queensland’s goal to increase farm gate output to $30 billion by 2030 by protecting plant and animal industries.

Dr Chay said round 2 offers greater support than the first funding round.

“For round 2 of the Queensland Biosecurity Boost Grants, we have increased both the dollar amount and the number of grants that are available,” she said.

“The Department of Primary Industries is continuing to safeguard Queensland from plant and animal pests and diseases through grants such as these.”

Zoom out

In round 1, The University of Queensland received an education grant for its Youth in Action project, focused on biosecurity awareness and resilience.

What to look for next?

Applications for round 2 are now open, with successful projects expected to deliver education, innovation, and preparedness outcomes statewide.
