What’s happening?

Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike MP hosted a free Australia Day sausage sizzle at Raby Bay Beach on 26 January, as locals gathered to celebrate Australia Day together.

The beach was filled with families, friends and neighbours enjoying the sunshine, coastline and community atmosphere while marking the national day.

“It was wonderful to see so many Redlanders out enjoying our beautiful beaches and celebrating Australia Day,” Mr Pike said.

“The atmosphere was overwhelmingly patriotic,” he said. “Thousands of local families and friends spent the day on the beach celebrating our great nation and enjoying everything that makes Australia such a special place to call home.”

Why it matters

The event comes as Mr Pike continues to push for legislative protections for Australia Day, arguing the date should not change without public approval.

“Everyday Australians are proud of their country and proud to celebrate Australia Day,” Mr Pike said.

Local impact

The barbecue brought together residents from across Redlands Coast, highlighting strong local support for celebrating Australia Day on 26 January.

By the numbers

Support for protecting the date of Australia Day continues to grow nationwide.

  • More than 73,500 Australians have signed Mr Pike’s petition, showing strong public backing for legislative protections.

  • 26 January is the date Mr Pike’s Bill seeks to protect through federal legislation.

  • 2025 is the year the Australia Day Bill was introduced to Parliament.

Zoom in

Mr Pike currently has the Australia Day Bill 2025 tabled before Parliament. The Bill would give Australia Day the same legislative protections as the Australian flag.

Under the proposal, the date could not be changed without approval from Australians through a national plebiscite.

“26 January is Australia Day and should not be changed without approval by the Australian people,” Mr Pike said.

Zoom out

The legislation reflects a broader national debate around Australia Day and how the date is recognised and protected under law.

“Australians are tired of their national day being used as a political plaything,” Mr Pike said. “Australia Day is 26 January and deserves the same protections we have for our national flag.”

What to look for next

Mr Pike’s Australia Day Bill 2025 remains before Parliament, while public support continues to build through the national petition.
