Redlands United and Lions FC delivered a pulsating encounter in their round 12 National Premier Leagues (NPL) clash at the Compass Grounds, culminating in a 2-2 draw that left fans on the edge of their seats. Lions FC pulled off a remarkable second-half comeback, securing a last-gasp equaliser deep into injury time after Redlands were reduced to 10 men due to an unfortunate handball incident.
The visitors initially found the back of the net within the opening 10 minutes, only for their goal to be disallowed for an offside infringement. However, Redlands swiftly took control, and around the half-hour mark, Peter Klaassen came agonizingly close to putting them ahead, as his shot evaded the keeper but rebounded off the post.

Just moments later, Jack Skinner propelled the Red Devils into the lead with a clinical strike from just inside the box, leaving the Lions’ goalkeeper with no chance. Klaassen then doubled Redlands’ advantage after 38 minutes, capitalising on a splendid build-up orchestrated by Guil Santana, ensuring a two-goal cushion for his team heading into halftime.
In the second half, Lions intensified their efforts, continuously pressuring Redlands and causing defensive chaos. Their persistence paid off in the 65th minute, as a defensive mix-up allowed them to pull one back, igniting hopes of a comeback.
Shortly thereafter, Redlands suffered a setback when one of their central defenders was struck by the ball outside the penalty area, resulting in a second yellow card for a handball offence. Reduced to 10 men, they faced an uphill battle to maintain their lead.
As the match entered injury time, Skinner had an opportunity to extend Redlands’ advantage, but the Lions’ keeper pulled off a crucial save. The game stretched into an unprecedented 15 minutes of additional time, with Redlands fighting valiantly despite being a man down for a staggering 40 minutes.
With time slipping away, Lions managed to conjure a dramatic equaliser, stunning both teams and securing a hard-fought draw, reminiscent of their first-round encounter. The thrilling contest showcased the resilience and determination of both sides.
Looking ahead, Redlands will return to their home ground for an 8:30 PM clash on Friday evening against Olympic FC in round 13 of the NPL Men’s competition. Additionally, they will face Lions FC once more in round seven of the Australia Cup on Tuesday evening before travelling to Rochedale for an NPL fixture on the following Friday night. Redlands United’s upcoming schedule promises more intense battles as they strive for success in both competitions.
