Labor pledges $1.6B for Redland Hospital expansion

Redland hospital

What’s happening?

The expansion will deliver an additional 181 beds, 48 treatment places in a new emergency department, and two extra operating theatres.

This will bring the hospital’s total capacity to 376 beds, including 23 acute mental health beds, 78 emergency department treatment places, and six operating theatres.

A new clinical services building will be constructed to accommodate the expansion, along with targeted refurbishments of the existing hospital.

Premier Miles stressed the importance of this expansion to cater for the Redlands’ growing population, stating, “We know that in the next 10 years, more than 185,000 people will call this beautiful part of Queensland home, so we must make sure the local facilities and services keep up.”

He added, “If I am elected in October, we will commence Stage 2 of the Redland Hospital expansion as fast as we can, delivering more beds, more services and more opportunities for the Redlands.”

Why it Matters?

As the Redlands Coast continues to grow, the demand for healthcare services increases.

Stage 2 of the expansion will significantly boost local healthcare infrastructure, ensuring residents have access to timely and high-quality medical care.

In addition to improving patient capacity, the expansion is expected to create more than 3000 construction jobs and offer career growth for healthcare professionals.

“This stage 2 expansion represents a fantastic opportunity for dedicated healthcare professionals, particularly those passionate about intensive and critical care, offering jobs and professional growth right here in the Redlands,” said Ms Richards.

Zoom in

Health Minister Fentiman highlighted Labor’s commitment to strengthening the region’s healthcare system, emphasising the continued partnership with the Albanese Government to deliver a $78 million upgrade, which includes integrating a two-storey building with the existing hospital and adding 37 overnight beds.

Mr Brown also pointed to previous investments, stating, “This commitment builds on our existing investments like the $25 million Lagoon Ward, the recently opened Redlands Satellite Hospital, and the $150 million dedicated to the new Mental Health Facility.”

Zoom Out

In addition to the new beds and theatres, Stage 2 will deliver a new emergency department short stay unit, a paediatric short stay unit, a new intensive care unit, high dependency unit, and a new operating theatre suite.

This upgrade is part of Labor’s broader health strategy, which aims to deliver over 3,400 extra beds across Queensland hospitals.

Local Impact

Mr Miles described the expansion as part of the state’s largest health infrastructure investment, noting, “We’re delivering the biggest Health Build in the country, adding more than 3,400 extra beds through new and expanded hospitals.”

He also warned that David Crisafulli’s plans to cut more than 1,200 of these beds would be a disaster for the rapidly growing state.

What to look for next

If re-elected, the Labor government promises to fast-track the hospital expansion and deliver more healthcare services and infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the Redlands.
