From Corporate to Consultancy
In the bustling world of corporate HR, Des Kerr was a seasoned pro. During his 18-year tenure with Lowes Manhattan Menswear, he navigated the complexities of system management, training and HR management. Des’s HR journey also included 10 years with Malouf Pharmacies and six years with Surf Life Saving Queensland, where he managed membership, education, and sport for six years.
Taking a leap of faith, Des transitioned to consultancy, diving headfirst into the challenges and rewards of helping small to medium businesses thrive. The COVID-19 pandemic presented an unexpected opportunity, and Des’s consultancy began to grow, bolstered by his introduction to the Cleveland Chapter of Business Network International (BNI) in 2021.
“I always had a passion for HR,” Des shares. “Helping people and businesses thrive was what drove me to make the leap into consultancy.”
Challenges and Strategy
Des’s background in corporate HR wasn’t without its challenges. Balancing strategic HR initiatives with administrative tasks was a daily grind. “I was always trying to find time to work on the business, not in the business,” Des explains. This struggle shaped him into the versatile consultant he is today. “I’ve become quite skilled at both strategic planning and the nitty-gritty admin work,” he explains. “This allows me to offer comprehensive support to my clients.”
He acknowledges the importance of admin skills but emphasises the need for strategic thinking. “Small businesses need to focus on the things that make a difference, and that’s where I come in,” he says.
Staying Ahead of HR Trends
Des stays ahead of HR trends, helping businesses adapt to new challenges. Whether it’s the latest HR laws, legislation, or the importance of being an employer of choice in a competitive job market, Des ensures his clients are well-prepared. He highlights the significance of workplace culture in attracting and retaining top talent.
“Employees have a lot more choice these days,” Des notes. “Creating a positive culture is key to attracting and retaining the best people.”
Comprehensive Services
Des offers a range of People and Culture services, including:
- General HR Support: From employment contracts and policies to recruitment and selection
- Performance Management: Conducting investigations, counselling, performance improvement plans, and termination processes
- Training and Development: Covering performance management, conflict resolution, business coaching, networking, customer service, and leadership
Local businesses benefit immensely from Des’s expertise, especially in keeping abreast of changes from the Fair Work Commission and ensuring compliance with modern awards.
People Focus
Des is a self-professed people person who understands the human side of HR. “Employees have to go home and face their families. Even in tough situations, I want them to have good things to say about their employers,” he emphasises.
Des isn’t afraid of difficult conversations, but his approach ensures dignity and respect. “Mental health is a big part of what I do. Back in the day, we were told to leave problems at the door. Now, we drive change in areas like sexual harassment and bullying.”
Navigating Small Business Challenges
Des tailors his services to the unique challenges of small and medium-sized businesses. “My goal is to tailor everything I do for each client,” Des says. “It’s not a cookie-cutter approach. Every business is unique, and their HR needs are too.”
Initial advice is free, and everything is customised.
Practical Steps for Success
Des advocates for recognising milestones, improving communication, and addressing conflicts early. “Invest time in hearing from your employees. Don’t let issues fester,” he advises. His approach helps businesses enhance their culture and retain top talent, making them employers of choice.
Local Commitment
Drawn to Victoria Point, Des has been a pillar of the community for 25 years, especially through his involvement with the Surf Life Saving Club on Coochie for the last 20 years – three of which he’s held the position of President. His recent appointment as Chair for the Redlands Regional Job Committee reflects his commitment to giving back. In this volunteer role, Des supports local job initiatives and works alongside ambassadors to enhance community employment opportunities.
“I love this community and want to see it thrive,” Des says. “My work with the Redlands Job Committee is all about supporting local businesses and helping them succeed.”
His journey from corporate HR to a trusted local consultant is a shining example of how passion and dedication can transform not just businesses, but entire communities.
