Feedback sought on proposed family tax break options

What’s happening?

Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike has invited thousands of young women across the Redlands to share their views on possible tax reforms aimed at making it easier to raise a family in Australia. The initiative seeks to gather community feedback on three proposed measures designed to ease financial pressure and improve work-life balance for parents and carers.

Why it matters

Rising living costs, higher mortgage repayments, and stagnant wages continue to strain family budgets across the region. Pike said the proposed policy ideas are focused on supporting households and recognising the role of parents, carers, and families in shaping future generations. The aim is to ensure government policy better reflects the social and financial challenges families face today.

Local Impact

If adopted, the measures could deliver meaningful financial relief to Redlands families, offering more choice in managing household finances and childcare arrangements. The reforms are designed to provide both immediate and long-term benefits for local households under pressure.

By the numbers:

  • One proposal, the “Raising the Nation” Tax Break, would double the tax-free threshold for parents with dependents from $18,200 to $36,400, with potential savings of around $5,824 a year for the average Redlands household.

  • Another idea, income splitting, would allow couples with dependents to share income evenly for tax purposes, reducing overall tax liability and recognising both partners’ contributions.

  • A third proposal would offer greater flexibility in how families use the Federal Child Care Subsidy, allowing parents to choose options that best suit their circumstances.

Zoom In

Many families across the Redlands have reported that daily expenses are rising faster than incomes, making it harder to maintain financial stability. Pike said these proposals are intended to address those concerns by offering practical tax adjustments and more flexible childcare options that reflect real household needs.

Zoom Out

Across Australia, policymakers are exploring ways to better support working families as they balance employment, childcare, and increasing living costs. Pike’s proposals contribute to this wider national discussion about modernising tax policy to better support parents and carers.

What to look for next

Residents can review the proposed ideas, calculate potential benefits for their household, and provide feedback through an online tool available at www.henrypike.com.au/strongfamilies.

Pike said he welcomes suggestions from the community to help refine the proposals and guide future family tax reform.
