What’s happening?

A 62-year-old Russell Island man died after an e-scooter crash on Highland Ridge Road early on 12 November.

He was found unresponsive around 6.30am and was declared dead at the scene.

The Forensic Crash Unit is now investigating what happened and is asking witnesses or anyone with footage to come forward.

Why it matters?

Queensland has been deemed the worst in the country in terms of e-bike incidents, and the southeast corner plays a big part in those numbers.

In response to the disruptions and significant safety concerns in the southeast, just down the road on the Gold Coast, e-Bike and e-Scooter riders were hit with a police crackdown that saw 35 Gold Coast e-bike riders and 14 juveniles charged.

Perhaps such a blitz is needed in Redlands.

Local impact

Following the spate of recent fatalities in Queensland alone, the incident highlights the need for safer habits on local roads and much stricter laws as more residents use e-scooters and other small transport options.

What to look for next?

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the circumstances of the incident and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant footage to come forward.

Investigations are continuing.
