Hayleigh Carter, a resident of Birkdale in Redland City, has turned her health struggles into a beacon of hope for young Australians battling chronic illnesses.

Diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder affecting one in 5000 people worldwide, Carter’s journey with Elhers-Danlos syndrome and Mast Cell Activation disorder led her to the Mater Hospital’s Young Adult Support Unit (YASU).

Supporting Queensland’s Youth

Mater’s YASU stands as Queensland’s sole sanctuary for 200 young patients grappling with chronic conditions, offering bespoke therapy and emotional aid.

Their multidisciplinary team adopts a sensitive approach, catering to individuals aged up to 26, navigating complex medical challenges that impact every facet of their lives.

Resilience Amid Adversity

Carter’s ordeal, spanning EDS, FND, and multiple other ailments, profoundly impacted her aspirations of a dancing career.

Now a qualified allied health assistant, she channels her passion into aiding disabled children. Despite the hurdles, Carter’s resilience shines through her advocacy work, urging others not to suffer in silence.

The Healing Touch of YASU

For Carter and many others, YASU has become a lifeline, providing weekly therapy and a haven for holistic care.

Psychologist Annalise Foster emphasises the unit’s commitment to nurturing patients, enabling them to flourish despite the challenges posed by chronic conditions.

Redland City’s Link to a Nationwide Mission

While physically situated in Brisbane, YASU’s impact extends beyond boundaries, resonating with communities like Redland City.

The struggles faced by Hayleigh Carter and others find echoes in the aspirations and trials of local youth dealing with similar conditions.

Mater’s YASU not only offers medical aid but also serves as a testament to resilience, reminding us of the power of support and advocacy in navigating life’s most formidable challenges.

In the heart of Queensland, Hayleigh Carter stands as an inspiration, advocating for those whose voices might otherwise go unheard.
