Redland City Mayor Karen Williams has announced rehabilitation efforts to rectify the embankment slippage on the eastern flank of the Wellington Point Reserve escarpment.
Mayor Williams revealed that the remediation project will encompass installing an anchor and mesh system designed to provide stability to the dam.
“Slope stabilisation presents intricate technical challenges, necessitating the expertise of specialised consultants and contractors,” stated Mayor Williams. “The chosen anchor and mesh system not only combats erosion but also fosters vegetation growth within the slope.”
Mayor Williams also extended gratitude to the community for their understanding during the assessment and planning stages, which led to the formulation of cost-effective remedies for the slippage. The dam was dislodged by severe weather events in February 2022, resulting in the temporary closure of the foreshore track connecting Main Road to the eastern boundary of Wellington Point Recreation Reserve.
The foreshore track will remain inaccessible until the dam’s stabilisation efforts are completed. Division 1 Councillor Wendy Boglary expressed her contentment with the commencement of repair work, anticipating a conclusion by December 1, 2023, barring weather-related hindrances.
“I’m relieved to see the initiation of repair work to address the significant landslip that occurred roughly 18 months ago on the eastern side of the Wellington Point Reserve escarpment,” Cr Boglary affirmed. “The community will undoubtedly welcome this update, and I am grateful for their patience.”
Traffic management measures will be enforced along Esplanade to ensure public safety, with fencing and signage remaining in place until the project’s culmination.
