What’s Happening?

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is inviting pilots of all experience levels to attend a Loud and clear – Effective communication safety seminar in Archerfield. The free seminar will take place on Wednesday, 6 August, from 6pm to 8pm at the Quality Hotel Robertson Gardens, Nathan.

Held as part of CASA’s annual national safety education program, the seminar is open to all pilots, regardless of licence category or flight hours. Attendees will gain insights into improving communication and safety, particularly in non-controlled airspace like Archerfield.

Why It Matters

Clear and accurate communication is critical for safe flying, especially where there is no air traffic control. CASA aviation safety advisor Tim Penney says the seminar is suitable for everyone, from new student pilots to highly experienced flyers.

“Communication is vital for building situational awareness, which is an essential tool for maintaining safety margins, especially at non-controlled aerodromes,” Penney said.

The seminar is designed not only to improve knowledge but also to give pilots practical tools and techniques they can apply directly in their flying.

Local Impact

The Archerfield seminar gives pilots from across the Brisbane and South East Queensland aviation community a unique opportunity to engage directly with CASA. It also offers a chance to discuss local operational challenges, seek clarification on rules, and share insights with fellow aviators.

“These seminars offer pilots of all experience levels the chance to refresh their knowledge, avoid common errors, and apply lessons learned from case studies and discussions to their own flying,” Penney said.

  • 1 national CASA seminar program, delivered across Australia every year

  • 6 major topics covered in the Archerfield session, including AFRU and real-life case studies

  • 2 hours of focused learning, networking, and discussion – from 6pm to 8pm on 6 August

  • Free entry for pilots of all licence categories, from recreational to commercial

Zoom In

The Loud and clear seminar will cover a wide range of communication-focused topics. These include:

  • The basics of human communication

  • Aviation communication rules and procedures

  • Real-life examples of communication errors

  • Communication improvement techniques

  • How to use an AFRU (Aerodrome Frequency Response Unit)

  • Real-life case studies to reinforce key lessons

CASA will also share practical risk management strategies and highlight how communication impacts airborne safety.

Zoom Out

Nationwide, CASA continues to lead proactive efforts to build a stronger safety culture in general aviation. Through seminars like this, the Authority aims to reduce incidents, boost pilot confidence, and promote safer skies for everyone. These programs are part of an ongoing commitment to accessible, continuous education for the aviation sector.

What to Look for Next

Pilots are encouraged to book their spot online as seating is limited. CASA will continue hosting similar safety seminars in other locations throughout the year.

Keep an eye on upcoming sessions to stay sharp and connected.
