What’s Happening?

Redland City Council will host its third annual Tech Savvy Tech Safe Forum at Alexandra Hills in September. The free event will help Redlands Coast parents, guardians and carers keep children and young people safer online.

The forum is being delivered with the Queensland Police Service, Centre Against Sexual Violence, Kids Helpline and Australian Federal Police/ThinkUKnow. It will also coincide with National Child Protection Week, which encourages community action supporting children’s safety and wellbeing.

Why It Matters?

Acting Mayor Julie Talty said online safety required support from across the Redlands Coast community.

“Cyber safety requires a whole-of-community approach and it’s our parents, guardians and carers who have the most important role to play in keeping children and young people safe online,” Cr Talty said.

She said the event would provide guidance about prevention, inappropriate online behaviour and available support.

“This free forum is a valuable opportunity to hear from experts about prevention strategies, how to recognise inappropriate online behaviour, and where to seek support if needed.”

Local Impact

The forum will focus on the risks families may encounter as children spend more time using connected devices. Cr Talty said growing device use had made cyber safety more important.

“With the online environment changing rapidly and children and young people spending more time on their devices, it has never been more important to focus on cyber safety.”

She said parents could learn practical ways to address cyberbullying, extortion and other online risks.

“This forum is a must for all Redland parents who want to learn about the practical steps they can take to protect their children from cyberbullying, extortion, and other online safety risks.”
