Redland City Council has expressed its respect for the Senate Inquiry’s intentions regarding Australia’s readiness for hosting major sporting events. However, the Council believes that the recommendations made concerning the Redland Whitewater Centre lack essential information.
New Home for Redland Resilience Training Centre
In a significant development, the Birkdale Community Precinct in Birkdale is set to become the new residence for the Redland Resilience Training Centre, which will also incorporate the Redland Whitewater Centre. This versatile venue is poised to host international, national, and state events, not only during the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games but also in the long term, including as a host venue for Canoe Slalom competitions.
Council’s Comprehensive Evidence-Based Approach
To ensure well-informed decision-making, the Council has commissioned over 20 independent studies. These studies encompass a wide spectrum, ranging from environmental and ecological assessments to social value and heritage impact evaluations. The collective evidence suggests that both the venue and the broader precinct will not have a detrimental environmental impact. Additionally, the Council has conducted its financial investigations, fostering confidence in the venue’s ability to yield positive financial returns.
Council’s Senate Committee Briefing
Citing concerns about the accuracy of information shared by community groups during submissions and at the Senate Hearing, the Council extended an invitation to the Senate Committee for a briefing on the Redland Whitewater Centre.
Late Submission to Senate Inquiry Underway
In response to an invitation, the Council is actively preparing a late submission for the Senate Inquiry.
Queensland Government’s Project Validation Report
The Queensland Government is currently in the process of conducting a Project Validation Report for the Redland Whitewater Centre. It’s worth noting that this process will continue until both the State and Federal Governments endorse the final report, making it premature to pass judgment based on the interim report.
Council’s Commitment to Venue Legacy
Determined to leave a lasting legacy for the community, the Council has been forging strategic partnerships to ensure that the venue can also serve as a training ground for emergency services.
Council Reaffirms Support for Brisbane 2032 Games
At a recent General Meeting, the Council reaffirmed its commitment and support for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games as a Junior Games Partner. This underscores the Council’s dedication to successfully delivering the Redland Whitewater Centre, a designated host venue for Canoe Slalom events during the Brisbane 2032 Games.
