Redlands Coast, Sept. 15— The Redland City Council has taken a significant step in bolstering its disaster preparedness by adopting an updated Disaster Management Plan for Redlands Coast. City Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Karen Williams, made the announcement, emphasising the incorporation of the newly developed Australian Warning System (AWS) and streamlining of the plan’s review process.
Australian Warning System integration
Mayor Williams explained that the AWS represents a groundbreaking national approach to disseminating information and Calls to Action for various hazards, including bushfires, floods, storms, cyclones, extreme heat, and severe weather. This system introduces a standardised set of icons, ensuring a consistent approach to handling emergencies, regardless of one’s location within the country.
“In times of crisis, having a unified approach is paramount,” Mayor Williams stated, highlighting the importance of national coordination in disaster management.
The updated Disaster Management Plan now features a planning cycle and planning map, facilitating a smoother review and update process. This enhancement ensures that the plan aligns with the annual review period established by the Inspector General of Emergency Management.
Importance of the Disaster Management Plan
Mayor Williams underscored the critical role played by the local Disaster Management Plan, describing it as a strategic document that outlines the coordination of disaster management efforts across Redlands Coast. She emphasised that the plan not only focuses on preparedness and response but also places significant emphasis on post-disaster recovery efforts.
“As we approach the impending summer bushfire season, this is a timely opportunity for our community to acquaint themselves with the practical information contained in the plan. It equips individuals, households, and businesses with the knowledge needed to prepare for potential disasters,” Mayor Williams urged.
The Redland City Council’s commitment to enhancing disaster management capabilities demonstrates its dedication to ensuring the safety and resilience of Redlands Coast residents in the face of diverse natural hazards. The adoption of the updated Disaster Management Plan, with the integration of the Australian Warning System, represents a significant stride towards this mission.
