Redland City Council Enhances Regulation of Secondary Dwellings

Redland City Council has enacted crucial changes to its City Plan to maintain Redlands Coast’s charm and support affordable housing. The amendments focus on the size and scale of secondary dwellings.

Amendments Strive for Balance Between Affordability and Infrastructure Responsibility

Mayor Karen Williams clarified that small-scale secondary dwellings won’t require Council approval or infrastructure charges. However, the changes aim to ensure that larger secondary dwellings contribute their fair share to infrastructure costs.

The amendments include specific size limits for secondary dwellings and come in response to State legislative shifts from the previous year. They take effect on February 1, 2024.

These changes align with the State’s goal of expanding housing options and minimizing infrastructure charges while addressing the national housing crisis. They also seek to prevent secondary dwellings from impacting neighbourhood character.

In sum, Redland City Council’s proactive approach aims to strike a balance between affordability and responsible infrastructure usage while safeguarding the community’s well-loved coastal amenities.
