Mayor Karen Williams has invited Senator Matt Canavan, chair of the Senate Inquiry on Australia’s sporting event hosting capabilities, to a private briefing. This session will focus on the Birkdale Community Precinct and the Redland Whitewater Centre.
Senator Canavan’s leadership in the Senate Inquiry has gained attention, especially after a significant hearing in Brisbane where community groups argued for moving canoe slalom events to Penrith, NSW, aligning with the IOC’s ‘New Norms.’
Mayor Williams sent her letter on August 24, shortly after the Senate inquiry’s Brisbane Hearing. Instead of the usual formal responses or public testimony, she chose a personal approach to provide Senator Canavan with a “deeper appreciation and understanding of the promise this venue holds for our city.”
