Redland City Council is rallying with emergency services and support agencies following the devastating house fires on Russell Island, which resulted in the loss of six lives on August 6 last year.
The Mayor of Redland City, Karen Williams, expressed her profound grief over the heart-wrenching incident, particularly involving young children. Mayor Williams acknowledged this tragedy’s impact on the close-knit Russell Island community and emphasised the need for unified support during these trying times.
To provide comfort and assistance to those affected, Mayor Williams urged individuals to avoid visiting the fire site. Instead, designated tribute sites have been arranged at the Bay Island Memorial Gardens on High Street, Russell Island, and Sel Outridge Park on Peel Street, Redland Bay. The latter was chosen for safety reasons, as the traffic at Weinam Creek could pose risks.
Mayor Williams requested respect for the privacy of the island community involved and advised against sending material donations via ferry or barge due to logistical challenges. Instead, those who wish to help are encouraged to contact official support organisations in the coming days.
The Council recommended donating through reputable organisations for those interested in providing financial aid. GIVIT, in conjunction with coordinating agencies such as the Redland Foundation, has established a donation account for immediate assistance. Furthermore, the Redland Foundation will initiate a coordinated support fund within 24 hours to ensure that public donations reach the proper recipients at the appropriate time.
In the face of this tragedy, the Redland City Council aims to foster a sense of unity and compassion, standing in solidarity with the affected community on Russell Island.
