In a significant move, Redland City Council has announced a budget of $430 million for the upcoming fiscal year, with a substantial focus on the islands of Redlands Coast. Mayor Karen Williams revealed that the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) will receive $2 million for the ongoing green sealing of island roads, bringing the total investment in SMBI road infrastructure to $19 million since 2016.

Highlighting the benefits of these investments, Mayor Williams emphasised that they not only enhance the islands’ quality of life and tourism appeal but also generate employment opportunities and foster economic growth throughout the city.

The budget allocation also includes funding for the final stage of the SMBI Ferry Terminals upgrade project, a collaborative effort between the council and the State Government. A total of $301,000 will be dedicated to completing this crucial stage, while an additional $301,000 will be utilised for complementary works at the Lamb, Russell, Macleay, and Karragarra Islands commuter interchanges. These initiatives aim to facilitate easier commuting and travel for residents and visitors to and from the islands.

Coochiemudlo Island will receive operational funding of $50,000 for the ongoing Shoreline Erosion Management Plan, ensuring the preservation of its natural coastal areas. Furthermore, North Stradbroke Island has been granted $1.5 million for Dunwich Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrades. The budget also sets aside $350,000 for a Point Lookout road upgrade and $200,000 for the renewal of seawalls and causeways in Dunwich.

Mayor Williams further revealed that island communities will benefit from various cost-of-living initiatives outlined in this year’s budget. These initiatives include a $500,000 Civic Support Fund, enabling community organisations to apply for funding to address immediate local needs, and a $1.5 million wastewater subsidy to reduce utility charges for residents.

The Redland City Council’s substantial investment in island infrastructure and communities demonstrates its commitment to improving the overall well-being and livability of the islands within the Redlands Coast. With a focus on sustainable development and enhanced services, these investments are expected to have a positive and lasting impact on the island’s residents and visitors alike.
