Redlands Coast parents and carers have received expert advice on protecting young people online at the Redland City Council-led Tech Savvy Tech Safe forum.
Held during National Child Protection Week, the forum covered current online safety risks and practical ways families can respond.
Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the event gave community members an opportunity to ask questions and learn practical online safety tips.
Why It Matters
Experts discussed cyberbullying, online grooming, extortion and exploitation. They also addressed privacy, consent, inappropriate online contact and the rise of artificial intelligence content.
Attendees learned how to identify online safety red flags, use prevention techniques and find support when needed.
“We hope parents and caregivers left the event feeling empowered to have open conversations with their young people about staying safe online,” Cr Talty said.
“In an increasingly digital world where young people are interacting with a range of different platforms, it’s important that we all play a role in cyber safety and keep an eye out for any materials or behaviour that raises a red flag.”
Local Impact
The Council-led forum brought Redlands Coast parents and carers together with organisations working across policing, online safety and family support.
Experts came from the Australian Federal Police/ThinkUKnow and Queensland Police Service, Centre Against Sexual Violence, Kids Helpline and Parentline.
“A bit of guidance and support from parents and family members can go a long way in keeping our young people safe in this complex online environment,” Cr Talty said.
