Home hope and healing for Queensland children

The Carinity Christmas Appeal will support services such as Carinity On Track, a safe home for young people in the child safety system.

What’s happening?

Carinity has launched its Christmas Appeal to support vulnerable Queenslanders facing a tough festive season. Many deal with poor health, loneliness, domestic violence or poverty, making Christmas another hurdle rather than a break from hardship.

A key focus is Carinity On Track, a residential refuge for young people aged 12 to 17 who cannot live with parents or in kinship care. The program gives support to children who have faced trauma and need a stable place to regroup.

Carinity On Track Program Coordinator Sammie McLardy said the young people often carry deep emotional strain. “The children are usually grappling with behavioural issues triggered by their trauma and it’s our mission and passion to guide them on how to express their emotions in more constructive ways,” Sammie McLardy said.

She said the aim is to build confidence and connection. “Our goal is to create lasting positive memories for our young people, so they know there are people who truly care about them. We celebrate achievements and actively support hopes and dreams, fostering an environment where individuals can truly thrive.”

Why it matters

The festive season shines a light on severe social pressures. The appeal helps children in care get the support they need, from daily routines to big milestones like school progress or reconnecting with family.
Sammie said the progress is clear.

“The positive changes we see are immense, as individuals develop essential life skills and become empowered to find their own solutions to the barriers they face,” she said.

Local impact

The appeal gives Queensland children facing trauma a chance to feel safe. It helps fund programs that build stability, confidence and long-term well-being.

By the numbers

  • The appeal will give young people the chance to attend a Christian outdoor recreation camp, offering safe support during the holidays.
  • Funds will also help build a playground to support counselling for children impacted by trauma.
  • Carinity continues to assist hundreds of Queenslanders across its community programs each year, keeping support close to home.

Daily life at Carinity On Track includes preparing for school, cooking nights and learning routines that help rebuild trust and skills. Youth workers and counsellors offer guidance so each child can move toward independence or family reunification.

The appeal highlights the broader need for funded youth services across Queensland, especially during Christmas when social and emotional pressures peak.
