What’s happening?

Airservices Australia has confirmed it will not proceed with the proposed Option 1.3 nighttime flight path known as the Turn over Moreton Bay option.

The decision follows strong feedback from Thorneside and Northern Redlands residents who opposed the plan. Federal Member for Bowman Henry Pike welcomed the outcome and said it reflected steady action from the community. He said, “Redlanders spoke up loudly and clearly, and this decision proves that when our community stands together, we get results.”

Why it matters?

The design aimed to move aircraft over water as soon as possible. Final checks later exposed major flaws. The plan would have concentrated aircraft noise directly over Thorneside and nearby suburbs that already deal with noise from southbound departures.

Mr Pike said, “This proposal simply wasn’t fair to our community.” He added, “Noise must be shared equitably, and Redlands residents were right to push back against a design that would have left them worse off.”

Local impact

Residents raised concerns about lifestyle impacts and fairness. Mr Pike said the decision showed the strength of local engagement. He said, “Redlands will not be a dumping ground for Brisbane’s aircraft noise problems.” He added that the outcome proved the community’s voice mattered.

By the numbers

Community action played a major role in the final decision.

  • More than 1,000 locals signed a petition calling for the proposal to be stopped.

  • Over 20 formal submissions were lodged by residents in Thorneside and nearby suburbs.

  • Extensive feedback was also provided during community consultations held by Airservices.

Zoom in

Mr Pike said the high level of involvement showed a determined effort to protect the local lifestyle and hold decision makers accountable. He thanked residents for their commitment.

He said, “I want to thank everyone who showed up, spoke up, and stood up for our community.” He also noted that the decision came from clear and persistent advocacy.

Zoom out

Airservices must now return with new flight path options as part of the next stages of the Noise Action Plan. These will be developed under Packages 3 and 4. Option 1.3 will not move forward in its current form.

What to look for next?

More options will be released for public review. Mr Pike urged locals to stay active in the process. He said, “While this is an important win, the fight is far from over.” He added that ongoing attention is needed to ensure Redland City does not end up worse off from decisions made to benefit other communities.
