What’s happening?

The 2025 Great Spring Clean Up is now open for registrations, with Clean Up Australia calling on communities to take part in environmental action this September and October.

Building on the success of Clean Up Australia Day each March, this campaign provides another chance for Australians to remove litter from streets, parks, waterways and public spaces before the severe weather season begins.

Free Clean Up kits are being offered to individuals, families and community groups, with kits for businesses available for a small fee. The initiative is supported by Bupa, whose national partnership strengthens the health focus behind this spring’s campaign.

Why it matters

Spring is the perfect time to head outdoors, but it also marks a critical period for environmental protection. Clean Up Australia Chair Pip Kiernan said:

“Spring is synonymous with heading outdoors to enjoy the warmer weather, but it is also right before severe weather season kicks in around our country. This makes it a vital time to try and remove as much litter as we can from our waterways and environment.”

By clearing litter now, communities can help prevent it from washing into drains and waterways during summer storms. The campaign also supports mental and physical wellbeing by encouraging volunteering in clean and healthy spaces.

Local Impact

Every glove worn and rubbish bag filled makes a visible difference. By joining or organising a clean-up event in their area, locals help create safer, cleaner and more inviting outdoor spaces for everyone.

Bupa Asia Pacific’s Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer Roger Sharp said: “As a healthcare company, we know that the environment has a significant impact on the health of people. Through our partnership with Clean Up Australia, we’re taking action together to clean up our public spaces and encourage active volunteering, so people have the best chance of living healthier lives.”

By the numbers:

  • More than 23 million Australians have volunteered with Clean Up Australia since 1990.

  • Clean Up kits are free for individuals, families, schools and communities.

  • 100% of donations go directly to supporting clean-up efforts and distributing kits.

Zoom In

The Great Spring Clean Up welcomes participation from all Australians — schools, families, community groups and workplaces. Registered volunteers receive a free Clean Up kit, which includes gloves, rubbish and recycling bags, safety instructions and resources to promote the event.

Anyone unable to participate physically can still support the cause through donations. These contributions help supply more kits, empowering volunteers across the country.

Zoom Out

Founded by the late Ian Kiernan AO in 1990, Clean Up Australia has grown into one of the country’s most trusted environmental organisations. Its focus now includes both removing existing litter and preventing waste before it enters the environment.

The Spring Clean complements year-round efforts to reduce single-use plastic, encourage recycling and build stronger community connections. The campaign also aligns with national health goals by promoting outdoor activity and civic involvement.

What To Look For Next?

Events will run throughout September and October 2025. To register, order your free kit or donate, visit cleanup.org.au. Whether you organise your own event or join an existing one, now is the time to roll up your sleeves and help protect Australia’s environment — one bag at a time.
