What’s happening?
Lifeblood has issued a state-wide call for help after its supply of O-type blood plummeted to the lowest level since 2023. The appeal, launched on Tuesday 3 June 2025, asks Queenslanders to donate urgently — especially those with O positive and O negative blood.
Why it matters
O negative blood is invaluable in trauma situations where there isn’t time to test a patient’s blood type. “It’s often stocked in ambulances and rescue helicopters so it can be used immediately in emergencies,” said Lifeblood spokesperson Belinda Smetioukh.
Though fewer than 7% of Australians have O negative blood, it accounts for 16% of hospital orders. “O positive is also vital — and can safely be used in most emergencies,” she added.
Local Impact
Redland City locals are encouraged to donate at centres nearby, particularly in Brisbane (700 donors needed) and Ipswich (150 needed). “We can’t meet national demand without Queensland’s support,” said Belinda.
“If you don’t know your blood type, donating is a great way to find out — and you could save a life in the process.”
By the Numbers
-
2,000 additional O-type donors needed across Queensland
-
700 in Brisbane and 150 in Ipswich
-
One in six blood orders from hospitals is for O negative
Zoom In
Donating is a simple process and takes about an hour. The blood donation itself takes 10 minutes and could help multiple patients.
Zoom Out
Lifeblood is seeing a steep rise in cancellations. The winter months often bring a drop in donor turnout due to illness and holidays.
