What’s happening?
Primary school students across Redland City are preparing to participate in National Walk Safely to School Day this Friday, 16 May 2025. Now in its 26th year, this annual event encourages active transport and healthier lifestyle choices among young Australians.
Why it matters
This national campaign, led by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, promotes more than just walking. It highlights the long-term benefits of daily physical activity, road safety, and environmental responsibility. The event also encourages families to ditch the car, reducing traffic congestion around school zones.
“Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day,” said Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council. “We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at end of their day.”
He also reminded parents, “Until they are 10, children must always hold the hand of an adult when crossing the road.”
Local Impact
Redland schools and P&C groups are encouraged to support the initiative by hosting a Healthy Breakfast and promoting walking groups to school. These local efforts can foster community spirit while creating lifelong habits for kids.
By the Numbers
- 1 in 4 children in Australia are affected by obesity (ABS 2017–18).
- 60 minutes of physical activity is the daily target for school-aged children.
- Thousands of students across Redlands and Australia will take part.
Zoom In
Schools can lead walking groups, set up safe walking routes, and involve local volunteers to assist.
Zoom Out
