What’s happening?
Dig IT, Australia’s first mini-excavator park, will celebrate its second birthday with a family-friendly dirt-filled party. From Friday 9 to Sunday 11 May 2025, Dig IT at Thunderbird Park, Tamborine Mountain, will host a weekend of earth-shaking activities. Special treats include birthday cupcakes, face painting, meet-and-greets with Dig IT ambassadors, and a Mother’s Day card colouring station.
Why it matters?
Dig IT has redefined outdoor fun by offering kids a unique chance to operate real mini-excavators. As co-founder Kate Keegan said, “There’s nothing like watching kids put on their hard hats and high vis, climb into the cab, and take control of their own digger. It’s fun, educational, screen-free and totally unique. The mile-wide smiles on kids and grown-ups are proof that digging in the dirt never gets old.”
Local Impact
Just an hour from Redlands, Dig IT provides a rare opportunity for hands-on outdoor play, boosting family outings in the Scenic Rim. The second birthday event promises extra excitement with limited edition cupcakes, selfie competitions, and hands-on creative activities for kids celebrating Mother’s Day weekend.
By the Numbers:
-
🛠️ Over 200,000 visitors have experienced Dig IT since its opening two years ago.
-
🏗️ The park’s nine Queensland-built 1.7-tonne mini-excavators have clocked more than 3 million minutes of digging and lifting.
-
🎯 Almost one million toppled blocks have fallen in the fan-favourite Demolition Zone.
Zoom In
At Dig IT, kids wear hard hats and high-vis gear before jumping into real 1.7-tonne CAT excavators. Children can dig dirt, stack tyres, and even catch ‘crocs’ using different machine attachments. “We’re still blown away by the reaction – it’s smiles for miles out here every weekend,” added Kate Keegan. “Dig IT is a screen-free, hands-on adventure kids never forget.”
Zoom Out
Set within the lush surroundings of Thunderbird Park, Dig IT represents a growing trend of unique, experience-based attractions across Southeast Queensland. This development promotes family time and outdoor activities away from screens, reinforcing why the Scenic Rim remains a popular regional escape for Redlanders.
