What’s Happening?
The Redlands community is turning pink for the Mater Chicks in Pink International Women’s Day Fun Run, presented by Queensland X-Ray.
While the main Brisbane CBD event is set for Sunday, 9 March, the bayside will host its own fundraising run a week earlier, on Sunday, 2 March.
Starting and finishing at the Old Cleveland Lighthouse, participants will take on 3km and 5km courses to raise funds for breast cancer research and support services.
Why It Matters?
This annual event raises essential funds for breast cancer research and support services at Mater, helping women across Queensland.
The money raised will fund vital medical equipment, including new technology at Mater Private Hospital Redland for detecting and monitoring lymphedema in breast cancer patients.
It also supports special bras, wigs, and home cleaning services for women undergoing treatment.
Breast Care Nurse Janice Butler highlighted the impact of community involvement:
“The Redlands fun run is getting bigger every year, and we want as many local residents to get on board as we can. Every dollar makes a difference to our amazing patients.”
Local Impact
Among those participating is a 50-strong team from Mater Private Hospital Redland—known as the Mater Redlands Pink Unicorns—which includes both staff and patients. Many other teams from across the Redlands have also joined, with participants running to support loved ones who have battled breast cancer.
Nurse Unit Manager Keila Slater of the Mater Cancer Care Centre emphasised the significance of the event:
“We’ll be catching up with lots of our current and former patients at the fun run. They are the most important people taking part – it’s their day more than anything.”

By the Numbers
- Hundreds of participants have registered for the sold-out Redlands event on 2 March.
- 23,000 runners will take part in the main Brisbane CBD event on 9 March.
- 50 team members from Mater Private Hospital Redland will participate as the Mater Redlands Pink Unicorns.
Zoom In
The event is not just about fundraising – it fosters a sense of community and connection for those impacted by breast cancer. Many participants run in honour of loved ones who have battled the disease, making it an emotional and uplifting day.
