What’s happening?

The University of the Third Age (U3A) Redlands is making significant strides in the construction of its purpose-built U3A Redlands Centre, located at the Redlands Research Facility in Cleveland.

Construction commenced in November 2023, with the slab, frame, and roof completed by early December.

Mayor Jos Mitchell praised the development, saying, “It was sweltering but great to see the new home of U3A. Big thanks to U3A President, Janese Lowe, for showing me around. Once complete, the building will allow members to have a dedicated space to meet and learn.”

According to Ms Lowe, “Last year’s welcome announcement of State Government funding has greatly assisted in progressing the build.”

Why it matters?

This milestone fulfils a long-standing vision of providing U3A Redlands members with a permanent, purpose-built learning and administrative hub.

Since 2001, U3A Redlands has operated from a temporary office at Cleveland District State High School.

The new facility will foster lifelong learning opportunities, offering a centralised space for classes, events, and community activities.

Local Impact

The centre will strengthen the community by providing a dedicated educational space for Redlands seniors and residents.

Additionally, it supports local employment during its construction phase by engaging builders and tradespeople.

By the numbers:

  • In July 2022, U3A Redlands received $9,577 through a Redland City Council (RCC) Project Support Grant for Stage 1 preliminary costs.
  • A $49,896 RCC Capital Infrastructure Grant was awarded in December 2022 for Stage 2, matched by an equal contribution from U3A Redlands.
  • In September 2023, the project secured $100,000 through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant, ensuring sufficient funds to reach Stage 3 (lock-up stage).

The project has faced challenges, including delays caused by limited availability of tradespeople and materials.

Despite this, U3A Redlands signed a contract with Liona Constructions in October 2023, and a ground-breaking ceremony was held on 8 November 2023.

The slab, frame, and roof were completed swiftly, setting the stage for interior works resume  last January 2024.

The U3A Redlands Centre project exemplifies how community organisations, supported by grants and local government funding, can achieve transformative outcomes.

It highlights the importance of partnerships between community groups and councils in delivering meaningful infrastructure.

What to look for next?

From 28 January 2025, U3A Redlands will operate temporarily from the Department of Primary Industries Administration Block at the Redlands Research Facility, Delancey Street.

Ms Lowe commented, “Once our new premises are operational, we will face new challenges that will require updated processes and rosters. The scheduling of academic and smaller classes at Delancey Street is still being finalised.”

The new U3A Redlands Centre is expected to open later in 2025, providing a vibrant and accessible hub for lifelong learning and community connection.
