MATES Theatre Genesis, affectionately known as MATES, is delighted to bring Melanie Tait’s heartwarming comedy The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race to life from January 24 – February 1 at the Donald Simpson Centre, Cleveland.
Inspired by a true story, the play follows Dr. Penny Anderson, who returns to her childhood home in the rural town of Appleton.
Outraged to discover the glaring inequality in prize money for the town’s annual Potato Race—$1000 for men but only $200 for women—Penny embarks on a spirited campaign to level the playing field.
A joyous exploration of community, family, and standing up for what’s right, The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race features a colorful cast of quintessential Aussie characters. The production is directed by Adelle O’Connell, with Traci Sumpter as Assistant Director.
The talented cast includes:
- Amanda Lay as Penny, a principled misfit determined to fight for justice.
- Peta Townend as Nikki, Penny’s cousin and the reigning Potato Race champion.
- Diana Gogulski as Bev, the traditionalist Appleton Show President.
- Claire Marchesi as Barb, a spirited town figure with a surprising secret.
- Rhea Basha as Rania, a Syrian immigrant finding her place in the community.
- Paul Hynes as the jovial Radio Announcer who captures the town’s vibrant energy.
Audiences can expect a “spudtacular” showcase of creativity and ingenuity. Prop master Diana Gogulski has transformed discarded materials into imaginative stage props, including memory foam harissa cakes, polystyrene goat curry, and handmade potatoes crafted from old stockings.
Originally performed by the Ensemble Theatre in Sydney (2019), Tait’s play has charmed audiences nationwide, including a recent staging by the Qld Theatre Company and a popular movie adaptation.
MATES Theatre Genesis has proudly served the Redlands Coast community since 1990. As the region’s longest-running community theatre group, MATES offers opportunities for individuals of all skill levels to participate in theatre—whether on stage, backstage, or front of house.
