OzFish Unlimited’s Moreton Bay Chapter successfully deployed 3,270 Robust Oyster Baskets (ROBs) into Moreton Bay

What’s happening?

This summer, OzFish Unlimited’s Moreton Bay Chapter successfully deployed 3,270 Robust Oyster Baskets (ROBs) into Moreton Bay.

This deployment is the largest of its kind globally and brings the total number of ROBs in the bay to over 14,000, marking a significant milestone in the chapter’s ongoing efforts to restore the bay’s shellfish reefs and marine biodiversity.

Why it matters?

The project is part of a 19-hectare restoration initiative aimed at enhancing water quality, providing habitats for marine life, and reviving shellfish populations in Moreton Bay.

These reefs play a crucial role in supporting marine biodiversity and fostering a healthier, more sustainable ecosystem in the bay.

Local Impact

The deployment was made possible thanks to over 40 volunteers who generously contributed their time and expertise. Their dedication highlights the importance of community-driven conservation efforts. OzFish Unlimited also acknowledged Tangalooma Island Resort for providing a boat and the Rainbow Venture barge crew for their smooth and efficient handling of the deployment process.

By the Numbers:

  • 3,270 ROBs were deployed this summer, the largest single deployment of its kind globally.
  • Over 14,000 ROBs are now part of Moreton Bay’s restoration project.
  • The project covers a 19-hectare restoration area, providing essential water filtration and habitat creation.

Zoom In

The collaboration with Tangalooma Island Resort and the Rainbow Venture barge crew was vital to the project’s success.

OzFish Unlimited expressed gratitude, stating, “We truly couldn’t have done it without their generosity and expertise—thank you so much for being a part of this project!” The volunteers, numbering over 40, were equally instrumental in loading, transporting, and deploying the reefs.

Zoom Out

Moreton Bay’s shellfish reef restoration reflects a global trend toward community-driven environmental conservation. With the scale and success of this deployment, OzFish Unlimited’s Moreton Bay Chapter is setting an inspiring example for other regions, demonstrating the power of collaboration between organisations, volunteers, and businesses.

What To Look For Next?

OzFish Unlimited will continue to monitor the ROBs as they integrate into the ecosystem, providing updates on water filtration improvements and biodiversity growth. These findings will help inform and inspire similar restoration initiatives worldwide.
